The history of ATSICHET
The Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islanders Corporation for Health Education and
Training was established to meet the training needs of the aboriginal medical
services in south east Queensland. These Aboriginal medical services were staffed
by health workers who had no formal qualifications, making training a priority.
ATSICHET was established in 1993 to provide the fundamental training required. Incorporated under
the aboriginal incorporations act and gaining registered training organisation status
in 1995. The first group of students commenced training in 1995 with
the first graduation being held at the end of that year. The aboriginal and
Torres Strait islanders corporation for health education and training has
continued to provide training in primary health care into the 21st century.
Initially courses were at the certificate level, with expansion in 2004 to the
diploma and certificate IV aboriginal primary health care and the diploma
community services mental health (non-clinical) and 2005 certificate IV mental
health non-clinical.
